Rufus M. Josey, 74, who managed newspapers across the southeast and who also had worked on the news staff of the Washington Star and the in the management of papers in Virginia, died Sept. 15 in Dothan, Ala. The cause of death was not reported.

He was managing editor at the Spartanburg (S.C.) Herald, worked on the news staff of the Washington Star and then worked in management at the Winchester (Va.) Star, the Progress-Index in Petersburg, Va., and the Daily Citizen-News in Dalton, Ga. He had been publisher of the Dothan Eagle since the late 1970s
